Your Body at 38 Weeks of Pregnancy

You may around this week feel your fundus drop as the fetal head descends or ‘engages’ in the pelvis. This is also accompanied by an increased sensation of pressure in the lower abdomen and pelvic floor. If it is your first pregnancy, this is more likely to happen at this stage; engagement is more likely to be closer to term in subsequent pregnancies. If this does not happen, it may indicate that there is some disproportion between the size of the pelvis and the presenting part of the baby, or that there is some other obstruction, such as a low-lying placenta, a fibroid or an ovarian cyst. An ultrasound examination may be worthwhile at this stage to exclude these possibilities. A pelvis CT scan to assess the size and shape of the birth canal may also be of value.

Your Baby at 38 Weeks of Pregnancy

Your baby measures 50 cm and weighs 3.1 kg.

If you do not feel any movements for a day or if there is a dramatic rather than gradual change n the nature of these movements, contact your doctor or the hospital so that the fetal condition can be checked. This check may involve a fetal heart rate trace or CTG, which assesses the fetal heart rate in relation to fetal movement and uterine activity. This can provide valuable information about the fetal condition.
