Your Body at 31 Weeks of Pregnancy

At 31 weeks pregnant, you should start considering your birth plan. You will naturally want everything to go smoothly from the time labor commences until delivery. You will facilitate the labor to birth process and also may find this time very memorable and meaningful. A birth plan is just an informal agreement between you, your partner and your doctor or midwife about such issues as your preferences for anesthetic, whom you want as a support person at the birth and whether you are willing to breastfeed or not. It is important to ask your doctor or midwife if he or she will abide by such a plan, provided all goes well and your birth is a normal, uncomplicated vaginal delivery.

Don’t forget to do pelvic floor exercises at this stage, as with increasing pressure on your bladder, stress incontinence (slight leaking of urine when you cough or laugh) is likely to occur. To prevent ongoing problems after the birth, regularly exercise to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. These are the broad, flat muscles that attach to the bony pelvis laterally and to each other where they meet in the midline, but are incomplete where the urethra, vagina and rectum pass through them. These muscles support everything above them because they stand erect. However, if they are weak they are likely to allow the organs above them to prolapse.

The baby’s eyelids are now un-fused allowing then to open and close. Your baby’s eye movements become increasingly obvious in anticipation of birth.

Your little baby now weighs around 2 Kg and measures approximately 39 cm.
