the Olympics have become more about the spectacle than the competition. the fans deserve better, the athletes deserve better, and most of all the citizens of these countries that are forced to pay these absurd costs for facilities that will soon be abandoned deserve better.

Unfortunately the Olympics have become big business and as such the IOC has little concern of the financial burden these decisions are placing on communities around the globe....so long as someone is willing to pay the price they are willing to turn a blind eye to the shameful conditions of past facilities.

Here's an Idea, have it in Lake Placid, send Bonnie Blair out there to light the cauldron with a Zippo, skip the opening and closing ceremonies other than the parade of nations, and bring back some sanity to the proceedings. It's long past time that the Olympics just rotate between 5-6 countries that can actually afford them. Winter should be in the U.S/Canada, Sweden/Norway, The Alps, Japan and that's about it. Summer should be in U.S./Canada, Europe (Greece but with outside assistance), China/Japan, and Australia.

Many don't want not only the costs for facilities, but the obscene security in and around the host cities that put you in a jail as well as its own costs both the Winter and Summer Olympics have required with exponential growth since the 1972 Munich Olympics.

I think one other area that will kill the Olympics will be the big advertisers and TV networks - especially in the USA - reducing their purchasing TV airtime and 'official' sponsorships. The return on investment in advertising and sponsorships worldwide in the Olympics may be in sharp decline due to collapsing middle class incomes in Europe and the Americas, and fewer people interested in the games so not watching them.

What I don't understand is why they don't just build dedicated sites for each. It would cost a lot less to do this. Surely there is a site somewhere that would be suitable for both summer and winter Olympics at the same site. In the long run, it would be a lot cheaper because security could be controlled, it would just require revamping sites instead of building them from scratch, etc. Require each nation that participates to send some money to cover the refurbishments, and be done with it. The biggest advantage is that when a flaw is detected with a track, that flaw can be corrected for the next Olympics rather than losing all that is learned during an Olympics.
